Hey it’s #favoritebookfriday and I actually have a book for us to read! Well it’s not like I didn’t but in wasn’t in a good headspace for a task that takes the longest time. The book we will be looking at for the next few week is “Classic Christianity” by Bob George. This book would probably be in the top five of most influential in my life. I read this book in a discipleship course in 2018 and i always pick it up time after time. The subtle is “life’s too short to

miss the real thing”

Bob starts off the book with telling a story. He did all the Christian things to do but felt dry. He prayed this prayer:” Lord take me back to where I first met you.” And didn’t understand why God said no. He felt like he was doing all the right things but feel like he was a spiritual treadmill. He was starting to realize Christianity isn’t supposed to be a job but a relationship. It’s easy but be with Jesus on that spiritual high but what about the low? However about the feeling that God’s mad or going to punish you when you mess up? That only creates bondage that’s you’re wrapped up in rules. That just creates more anxiety that shouldn’t be. God doesn’t have his “great big wooden spoon” to spank us when we mess up. That’s not the abundant life Jesus promised and not normal. We don’t have to hide out brokenness. If the truth sets us free then error puts us in bondage. The word doesn’t set us free but the word incarnate does.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking you have to go around changing people. God does that part. All you have to do I share the good news. It’s not performance based at all. Don’t get so committed to the plan that you forget the God of the plan. Let’s take in the God of truth and start fresh.

We’re going to look at chapter 2 “the truth about error” on the website so head over there for more.

So we can’t control our emotions but we can control our thoughts. That’s why Philippians 4:8 is big on what you think on. The only defense with error is to be so familiar with truth of Gods words that when we come across error we can discern it.

The debate of truth and error began in the garden of eden. Satan’s goal is convince us the counterfeit is the truth. He doesn’t want you to find the potential the truth holds so he’s going to lie and keep lying. Bob gives some examples of this next.

There’s a big difference in knowing what something says than what he means. The same is true for the Bible. That’s why we need Holy Spirit to help us. We don’t need him for us to read the Bible but we need him to help us understand it. He helps us understand what truth is. Be still and listen to Holy Spirit. You’ll find freedom and life there!

Chapter Highlights (Chapter 1-2)

  1. Without all the Christian “how-to”resources I think we have forgotten how to live. We have forgotten that the Christian life is Christ not just a change of lifestyle.

  2. No amount of service will ever make a person spiritual.

  3. The Christian life really isn’t a matter of perfecting your acting ability. It can be real.

  4. The truth of the word points us to the Son

  5. Christianity isn’t a religion but a relationship with God through his son Jesus Christ

  6. Jesus didn’t call me to change anything. He called me to proclaim truth.

  7. That’s the danger with error. What we put into our minds will affect our emotions. Our emotions always follow our thoughts.

  8. We have to identify the error in our minds and replace it with the truth of God’s word

  9. The only way the event can harm us is through deception, through creating unfounded fears through lies.

  10. We must look at the word of God as the plumb line by which everything is measured.
