“O Holy Night” by Placide Cappeau de Roquemaure (performed by Maverick City Music)

It’s the Sunday before Christmas on this #worshipsongsunday. We’re going to talk about my favorite Christmas hymn. I did some research on the history of this song and it was written by Roquemaure on his way to mass. His friend who was Jewish helped him compose the song. Because of this, his song was hidden away for about 100 years until it was discovered in America by the abolitionist named John Sullivan Dwight. It really brought meaning to the second verse which we’ll talk about in a second.

“O holy night the stars are brightly shining. It is the night of our dear savior’s birth.” God had been silent for 400 years and the world was in darkness and sin. The soul could feel the weight of sin and the need of a savior. But God stepped in until “a thrill of hope the weary world rejoices for yonder breaks a new and glorious mourn. Fall on your knees, oh hear the Angel voices. O night divine, oh night when Christ was born.”

God incarnate became flesh and “moved into the neighborhood”. He lived among us because you were worth it.

“Truly He taught us to love one another; His law is love and His Gospel is Peace Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother And in His name, all oppression shall cease”

Jesus said this ““This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”

‭‭John‬ ‭15:12-13‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.””

‭‭John‬ ‭13:34-35‬ ‭ESV

Jesus set the example by teaching us to love one another. “His law is love and his gospel his peace.” This Prince of Peace is breaking chains. All oppression shall cease in his name. Praise his holy name. “His power and glory evermore proclaim.” It was a holy night. Let’s celebrate the savior! Emmanuel, God with us.
