Good Friday April 2,2021

Today is described as the darkest day in history so how can we call such a day “Good Friday?” Well today I’m going to give a sermon on the topic. I’m not sure when today so be on the lookout for when I go live. There are a few resources available under the “guides” tab and music in the “Holy Week 2021” story.
I don’t want to make this post very long because I’d rather talk live. Let’s look at a few places in scripture to find a deeper truth and so deep love today. The first Scripture actually comes from Romans chapter 5. Paul says we were weak and dead in our sin. At the right time, Jesus died for us. You might give your life for someone who deserves it, but what about someone who doesn’t? That’s you and me. But God shows his love in this way, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. We are made right with God through the blood of Jesus. We no longer have to fear the wrath of God with the promise of resurrection. We were enemies of God now were His friends. He who knew no sin became sin so we could become the righteousness of God.
Jesus set the example for us, he humbled himself like a servant in human likeness. Jesus was obedient to death, even death on a cross! Oh sweet child of God he did it for you. This war for your soul is personal for Jesus. He says “Father, forgive them, they don’t know what they’re doing.”He stayed on the cross from the sixth to the ninth hour (noon to three in the afternoon) struggling to breathe and in severe pain. There are seven phrases Jesus says but we are going to talk about three. In John 19, Jesus receives the sour wine and says “It is finished!” Tellesti! Paid in full. Your sin is paid for. Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
The sky went dark and the earth shook violently. What amazes me is the six inch thick veil in the temple that separated God from his people was torn from the top to the bottom. We’re no longer separated from God the Father but covered in is deep love. Finally, Jesus says “Father, into Your hands I commit my spirit.” Then he breathed his last. This had to be the Son of God. Nothing like this has ever happened before. People went home beating their chests after all that had happed on this day. That’s all we got. We have to believe this scandalous love is good. We’re not saying goodbye yet. It’s only Friday and Sunday is coming. We call such a day, Good Friday.
