Holy Saturday April 3,2021
Today is the day in between Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday. They took Jesus’ body down of the cross last night. His broken beaten and wounded body that was broken for you. I imagine his disciples weeping and hurt because their Lord, their God, their teacher has died like he said he would. I wonder if they forgot Jesus’ promise to rise again on Sunday morning. I watched The Passion of the Christ yesterday and I was thinking of Mary, the mother of Jesus. She watched her son die a criminal’s death of complete shame and humiliation. People left beating their chest saying nothing like this has ever happened before. The son of God is dead. How clearly we can see that.
Joseph of Arimathea is a Pharisee who was a follower of Jesus, asked Pilate to take Jesus’ body down and bury it. Typically people who were crucified weren’t buried because they didn’t get that kind of respect. There also couldn’t be dead bodies around on the sabbath. Joseph offers his brand new tomb to bury the Lord in. Scripture also says Nicodemus and some women were there to cover Jesus’ body in spices and wrap him in burial cloths.
The only details given about Holy Saturday is “Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.”

I wonder what was going on the disciples minds. Probably fear, stress and anxiety. They’re hiding away hoping they’re not next to be crucified for following Jesus. This is not the end friends. Sunday is going. The Dawn of salvation is breaking. Jesus fights the war for your soul and won. And tomorrow, we can clearly see the finality of the cross. It is finished.
