What do you need to let go of?”
Hi guys! I can finally make my announcement on Monday! Because I don’t wanna mess up the post setup but if you wanna see it, head to @talesofterryn! Anyway let’s get to work.
Today’s thought come from the sermon last night. It comes from a rather challenging piece of scripture. Mark 8:31-35. Jesus tells his disciples he’s going to die soon and they will die also. You know the whole “pick up their cross and follow him.” Do we appreciate this kind of love that Jesus? He loves us so much, he lets us die to the things keeping us from going home to him. Jesus is asking us to let go. Peter is so opposed to this idea he pulls Jesus aside to talk to him. Jesus says to Peter “Get behind me Satan.” If we don’t let go, we’ll soon lose everything. Sometimes I wonder what the prodigal son has to let go of to run home to his father. Pride. Vanity. Shame. I wonder what the father has to let go of to run to his son. He has to let go of options and judgement and probably anger to run to his son. His reputation was ruined as his son ran to him after losing everything. It’s not the fear of loss for Peter but the letting go of control. We’ve been spending the past year trying to gain what we lost, but instead letting go. Jesus says “pick up your cross and follow me.” I wonder what God we worship when we hold onto things. Let go of religion. We sang “Simple Gospel” and there’s a line that says I’m laying down all my religion.” What if it’s the letting go of the idols, certainties and everything else that we can let go. Jesus died so we could die and be raised to life through him. People say “Jesus died so you wouldn’t have to.” But that’s not exactly true. Jesus died to we could. We can pick up our cross and follow him. Breathe and let go.
